Loose sweets by the quarter from two hundred jars, weighed out on brass scales while you decide. Traditional boiled sweets and proper liquorice sit alongside a wall of pick-and-mix, a fudge counter poured on the premises, and a small but serious shelf of single-origin chocolate. Vegan and gluten-free jars are marked on the label rather than kept apart, and the Saturday queue is part of the experience.

Nella Prowse

Owner, and the one on the scales

I took the shop on in 2019 after twenty years of saying I would. Half of what is in the jars is what my grandmother sold in Bridport — pear drops, cough candy, the proper aniseed balls that take your head off. The other half is whatever the children ask for often enough that I give in. Everything loose is weighed out in front of you, quarter by quarter, and I will always let you try one first.
